Sixties Fashion Design Challenge

Primary 6 had great fun today.  To round off our project on The Sixties, we set a year group co-operative learning challenge,where groups in each class had to design an outfit in the style of a fashion trend from The Sixties.  Each team had a model, who dressed in the outfit, took part in a fashion parade.  Mrs Tariq was our judge and chose a winning outfit from each of the classes.

James Gillespies High School Music Department

Today Ms Miller, a music teacher from James Gillespies High School, came to our assembly to tell us about all the exciting musical opportunities that are offered at the High School.  One of the the S3 pupils who is a member of the pipe band also told us all about what is involved in playing with the band.  The pipe band won fourth place in a competition last year and have played at lots of venues and events including at Murrayfield.

Ms Miller also explained how children who play instruments in our school will be able to join bands at Gillespies in the future.  She also told us that in S1 if you don't yet play an instrument you can audition for a range of instruments.  In addition, she also told us that the children can go to a free lesson with the pipe band on the 30th October at the High School to find out if they might like to take up lessons. Rugby Success

A couple of weekends ago, Liam took part in the Stewarts Melville Lion home tournament and was the captain of the Stewart Melville Lions Team. His team won the tournament beating North Berwick in the final.  On the way to the final, they also beat Currie, Madras and Stirling County. 

Primary 6C are proud of Liam for this impressive achievement!

Pop Art

We have been looking at the work of the artist Paolozzi and have discussed some of the themes in his work (technology, popular culture, clutter).  We have collected images of the sixties in preparation to make our own collages in the style of Paolozzi and are now making visual decisions about line and a muted palette for our background.  Here we are painting our background.

Cyclocross Race

Calum and Kirsty took part in an exciting challenge at the weekend when they took part in the Cyclocross Race at Inchpark.  This involved cycling up lots of hills and doing hurdles.  Calum got 16th place out of 25 and Kirsty was 8th in the girls section.  

Kirsty has also now raised over £1250 for Parkinson's Disease after her cycling challenge a few weeks back where she cycled from Glasgow to Edinburgh.

Swimming Star - Anna Green

Anna Green continued her swimming success this weekend when she won medals at the Club Championships for the backstroke and the 100 metre medley.  Go Anna!

Gymnastics Star - Isla

Primary 6C are also extremely proud of Amazing Isla who trains so hard with her dancing and gymnastics.  This weekend she had huge success at a gymnastics competition in Perth when she won 3 Golds - she was first overall, first on the beam and first on the floor - and a silver for the bars.

Primary 6C - Rugby and Cross Country Success

Primary 6C are very proud of Boris for all his sporting achievements.  This week has been particularly successful for him as he came 7th in the Inter a Schools Cross Country last Wednesday and was part of a winning rugby team at Loretto at the weekend. He also won player of the tournament.  Well done Boris.

Cycling Adventure

Primary 6 enjoyed a fantastic cycle along the Innocent Railway Path on Thursday afternoon.  Our fabulous cycle trainers were impressed at how fit and competent the children were on their bikes.  Lots of fresh air, lovely sights and fun on the bikes; what a great afternoon.

P6 Bronze Junior Award Scheme Scotland (JASS)

The Junior Award Scheme Scotland (JASS) is an accredited learning programme, celebrating wider achievement, for young people (P6-S2). Sciennes and Tollcross Primary Schools have been implementing this scheme since we piloted it in 2009. Pupils can aim for Bronze in P6, Silver in P7 and Gold in S1/S2 at James Gillespie's High School.

The concept emerged from a discussion during a Sciennes P7 visit to Lagganlia between Alice Brown, Gael Logan and Barry Hewitt who came up with the idea to set up a 'Duke of Edinburgh' style award scheme for upper primary pupils. The scheme has since been developed into a city wide programme.

There are three levels (Bronze, Silver and Gold), each requiring a higher degree of commitment. Each level also includes four sections to be completed, with a minimum of 8 hours in each to achieve Bronze:

• My Interests - a hobby or interest
• Get Active, Stay Active - involvement in a sport or physical activity
• Me and My World - a community or environmental project
• Adventure - a teamwork challenge through involvement in an outdoor activity (e.g Benmore)

The scheme runs from the beginning of the October holiday until the end of the Easter holiday and pupils can begin planning how they will achieve their Bronze award using this form:
